Image: Schaefer to announce Victor Ortiz’s replacement opponent in the next two daysBy Dan Ambrose: Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions is reportedly going to be announcing Victor Ortiz’s replacement opponent for June 23rd in the next two days. They have an opponent they’re currently negotiating with right now but they won’t say who he is until they make the announcement.

The opponent is being brought in to replace Andre Berto, who allegedly tested positive for the steroid nandrolone.

Schaefer said to vcstar.com “We will be announcing within the next two days the replacement.”

Additionally, Roland Arellano, the manager for Ortiz, said that they have an opponent picked out and are currently negotiating with him, but they can’t say his name. It’s not likely going to be anyone really dangerous because this is a short notice thing and Golden Boy wants to get Ortiz back winning again after him being stopped in the 4th round in his last fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September.

It pretty much goes without saying that the opponent will be one of Golden Boy Promotions fighters.

Here is the list of available junior welterweights and welterweights in Golden Boy Promotions’ stable:

Devon Alexander
Marcos Maidana
Erik Morales

I honestly can’t see any of those guys taking the fighters. If they choose someone from Mayweather Promotions it would have to be Jessie Vargas. I really don’t like the idea of Ortiz facing Vargas in a main event. I don’t see that as a main event fight, so hopefully Vargas isn’t chosen.

I can see how Golden Boy might want to do it in order to do it out of a favor for Floyd Mayweather Jr., to get in good with him. However, I think it’s a really awful fight because Vargas has looked very mediocre in the last three fights I’ve seen him in.
