Image: Kell Brook expected to announce his next opponent a week from nowBy Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated #2 WBO 147 pound contender Kell Brook (27-0, 18 KO’s) is expecting to announce his next opponent on Ringside next week. However, contrary to what his promoter Eddie Hearn had been saying about Brook’s next fight being a big-named opponent, it’s not expected to be a big name.

Welterweight contender Carson Jones, who has beaten plenty of times and is hardly a big name, was in the running for the Brook fight. However, it doesn’t look as if Jones will get the shot. 36-year-old former IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck (32-2, 18 KO’s) is one name that’s been floated around as a potential Brook opponent, but I can’t see it happening. Zaveck likely wouldn’t go for traveling all the way to the UK to give Brook a big hometown advantage, and I can’t see Brook saying yes to fighting in Slovenia where the crowds might be smaller than what Brook has become accustomed to fighting in front of him in the UK.

Since it doesn’t look like Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn has deep pockets to get a big name like Marcos Maidana, Brook is probably going to have to face another little known fringe contender in order to continue padding his record.

The criticism made against Brook is he’s literally wasted eight of his career fighting 2nd and 3rd tier fighters. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is another fighter that took years for him to finally face a guy with a pulse, but Brook makes Chavez Jr. look great in comparison with all the weak opponents that Brook has fought all career long. This is how sad it is. Recently Brook stepped it up and fought Matthew Hatton last March. It’s hard to believe that this was a step up bout for Brook, but that’s what the case was.

Brook has decent power and hand speed. However, he’s got these arms that will make it a problem for when he faces a fighter with a longer reach that can fight well on the outside.
