Image: Broner: I hope Sykes is in shapeBy Scott Gilfoid: WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (23-0, 19 KO’s) appears to be following Floyd Mayweather Jr’s lead in putting in seriously hard workouts. Broner, 22, might be wasting his efforts at least for his next fight against British domestic level fighter Gary Sykes (20-2, 5 KO’s) on May 19th at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Broner said this on his twitter page “20 rounds sparring straight. No rest. 4 sparring partners, 30 minutes on bag exercise out, and stretch. Hell of a workout. I hope he [Sykes] is in shape.”

That sounds like a workout routine from hell. It must be really tough on Broner. I can’t see Sykes doing anything even close this in his training for the fight, but even if he did, it wouldn’t matter because he’s so far out of his depth in this fight that it’s not even funny.

This is one of those fights where the champion picks out a 2nd tier fighter and gives him a once in a lifetime title shot. You know, kind of like one of those Rocky movies stories. However, in this case, Sykes is so far out of his league that he can’t even dream to fight well enough to get a draw or a win. He lacks the fundamental ingredient to pull a Rocky story and that’s power. He doesn’t have the power to trouble Broner, and this is just going to be a slaughter.

I think a victory for Sykes is just being able to make it into the second half of the fight. He has no chance of winning the fight, and the only real victory I can see for him is if he can at least make it to the second half of the fight before he gets knocked out. I mean, Sykes is getting knocked out anyway. There’s no ifs and buts about that. The only question is whether he gets early or late. I see him getting flattened in the 1st round.
