Image: Tyson Fury's promoter sees him getting a Klitschko fight in early 2013By William Mackay: Mick Hennessey, the promoter for unbeaten heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (18-0, 13 KO’s), believes that the soon to be 24-year-old Fury will be getting a crack against one of the Klitshko brothers in March or April of next year after Fury, #8 WBC, #15 WBO, has become the mandatory challenger for one of them.

Hennessey told express.co.uk “We are eying the Klitschkos already. But the best way forward right now is for Tyson to continue to build up his name on terrestrial television and become a mandatory challenger for one of the Klitschkos. That way we can try to get one of them to come over to Britain and fight him.”

Fury may get a title shot against one of the Klitschkos, as they pretty much see him as an target ready to be exposed to the light of the boxing world. But Hennessey isn’t going to be able to get either of them to come to the UK to fight. That’s not going to happen unless Fury gets a lot more popular in a real hurry. Even then, I don’t see it happening because the Klitschkos can sell out huge stadiums in Germany, so why take a risk on young fighter like Fury, who has yet to fight in front of huge stadium crowds. It was stupid risk for the Klitschkos to assume that Fury can draw like that. If the Klitschkos weren’t willing to risk it for clearly a more popular fighter in former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye, then they certainly won’t do it for a still very unproven young heavyweight like Fury.

Fury really needs to step it up a couple of levels in his competition because he’s been spoon fed pretty much his entire career. He’s faced only one decent fighter in Dereck Chisora last year, beating him by a wide 12 round unanimous decision in July 2011. However, Chisora came into the fight overweight and gassed out after two rounds. It was pretty sad.

Fury’s other notable wins have come against the following Euro level heavyweights:

Martin Rogan
Neven Pajkic
Nicolai Firtha
Marcelo Luiz Nasimento
Zack Page

If Hennessey is serious about wanting to try and match Fury against one of the Klitschko brothers, then he needs to start putting him in with good opponents that will build up his name instead of putting him in with 40-year-old guys like Rogan like in his last fight. Fury wanted to win the Irish heavyweight title, according to him. Who knows what other obscure heavyweight title Fury will want to go after next so pump out his chest and feel good. Hennessey needs to give the guy some direction and make it clear to him that beating older guys for obscure titles is basically doing zero for the guy. It might give him a payday but he’s not being improved in any way, unless he plans on fighting 40-year-old part time fighters his entire career. If so, then by all means, fight Rogan every time out and Fury will be moving ahead.

Fury is scheduled to fight on June 30th against another weak opponent. He could fight for the European heavyweight title against Alexander Dimitrenko, Kubrat Pulev or Robert Helenius by the end of the year, but I doubt it. If Fury wasn’t willing to fight David Price, then I don’t see him being ready to take on one of those guys. I see those heavyweights as being a step above Fury, and if he takes on one of them, he can forget about fighting the Klitschkos, ever.
