Mijares: I have too much experience for Santa Cruz

11 Santa Cruz and Mijares IMG_1507(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: 32-year-old former IBF/WBA/WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (49-7-2, 24 KO’s) thinks his experience will be the telling factor tonight in his title challenge against the younger 25-year-old Leo Santa Cruz (26-0-1, 15 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mijares has a lot of confidence going into this fight, but not much to show for in terms of wins over high quality opposition.

In his last five fights, Mijares has beaten Jovanny Soto, Carlos Joan Gaspar Jacobo, lost to Victor Terrazas, beaten a well past his prime Rafael Marquez and Eusebio Osejo.

Donaire could fight Mijares in early 2013

Image: Donaire could fight Mijares in early 2013By Chris Williams: It looks like WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s) will continue on his course of fighting older fighters, as he’s being talked about fighting former IBF/WBA/WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (47-6-2, 22 KO’s) in the first part of next year, according to the Manila Bulletin.

Donaire was supposed to fight Mijares earlier this year, but HBO said no to that fight. Donaire then opted to fight IBF super bantamweight champion Jeffrey Mathebula. If HBO said no once to a Mijares fight I wonder if they’ll change their mind about this now? Mijares stopped a past his prime Rafael Marquez last month in a 9th round stoppage, but Mijares hardly looked good. Marquez had him on the ropes in the 1st round and was really teeing off on Mijares when the flow of the fight was stopped due to a head-butt.

Cristian Mijares vs. Rafael Marquez on October 27th

Image: Cristian Mijares vs. Rafael Marquez on October 27thBy Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBA/WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (46-6-2, 21 KO’s) will be fighting former two division world champion Rafael Marquez (41-7, 37 KO’s) for the vacant WBC Silver super bantamweight title on October 27th at the Arena Cuidad de Mexico, in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico.

Both Mijares and Marquez have moved up in weight to the super bantamweight as they’ve aged but neither are considered a major player at super bantamweight despite the fact that they’re fighting for the WBC Silver bantamweight strap. It’s just a trinket offered up by the World Boxing Council to try and give the fight some kind of meaning when there’s not much to get from this given their positions in the division.
