Mayweather may have hoped that the 24/7 episodes would help drum up some excitement for the fight, but it seems to have done little because there’s no real antagonism between the two.

Cotto doesn’t have a strong physical presence on screen and seems shy, and retiring. He’s not able to come up with the kind of foil to bring out the best in Mayweather. This is too bad, because Mayweather and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer were hoping that the Mayweather-Cotto fight would bring in big pay-per-view numbers. But I think it’s going to come in with some average numbers in the 1 million range. It would be a big success if it brought in 1.4 million buys, but that doesn’t seem too realistic because there’s just not a real interest in the fight from what I can see.

Cotto needs more tips in marketing fights, and could really use an acting coach to bring out the theatrics that are buried underneath his quiet exterior. Boxing is show business and it’s not just what a fighter does in the ring that makes him a star. He has to interest fans with his personality, and Cotto is playing it all wrong. It’s obviously too late now for him to do much to get fans that are turned off by the fight interested, but for the future, Cotto needs to try and help out with marketing the fight by coming up with some kind of character.

Cotto needs to show more intensity and anger. The guy needs a good acting coach to help sell the other part of him that is needed for marketing fights. It’s too bad Mayweather is pretty much carrying this show on his shoulders, because he can’t do it alone.
