Image: Froch needs a KO to beat ButeBy Scott Gilfoid: Let’s be real here: Carl Froch probably doesn’t have the boxing skills to pound out a decision win against IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute in their fight on May 26th. It doesn’t matter that the fight is being held in Froch’s home city at the Nottingham Arena in Nottingham, UK. Bute is simply so good that he’s going to likely make Froch look a novice.

When a home fighter is fighting in front of his home fans, he often win a questionable decision because judges being influenced by the screaming from the fans. However, in this here fight I don’t see that even working for Froch, because it’s simply too much of a mismatch for him. Say what you want about Bute having a fragile chin and weak opposition through most of his career, he is a very good boxer and is almost impossible to beat by a decision.

It’ll take superb fighters like the Dirrell brothers and Andre Ward to finally bring Bute down to earth to show that he’s human after all. But I don’t see Froch as having nearly good enough boxing skills to pound out a decision. That doesn’t mean Froch can’t win, because he can, but it’s going to likely require for him to knock Bute out of that to happen. Froch will have to pressure Bute on the run, because Bute will likely be backing up all night long to keep from getting hit by Froch. This means that Froch needs to study up on pressure fighters that job after their running opponents in order to land their shots. Froch is much too slow to plod after Bute and land anything significant because he doesn’t have the wheels to make that possible. He’s got to jog after the guy to catch up to him.
