Image: Kell Brook vs. Carson Jones possible for July 7thBy Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like Eddie Hearns, the promoter for undefeated welterweight contender Kell Brook (27-0, 18 KO’s) is striking out in his attempt at getting a “Big name” for Brook, #2 WBO, #5 IBF, #6 WBA, #6 WBC, for his next fight on July 7th at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, Yorkshire, UK. According to Thestar.co.uk, Hearn is looking at matching him against American welterweight contender Carson Jones (33-8-2, 23 KO’s) on July 7th.

Having seen the 25-year-old Jones fight on numerous occasions over the years, I can’t say I’m impressed at all with this pick. On the positive side, one of the sanctioning bodies, the IBF, has Jones ranked #3, but none of the others do. I see Jones as bottom 16, just missing the cut to get into the top tier. Jones has won his last seven fights against 2nd tier opposition, but he has a whole bunch of losses against decent – not great – opposition. He’s very, very beatable.

Let’s go through the lists of guys that have beaten Jones, shall we?

* Rogerio Pereiera – I never heard of this guy but he beat Jones in September 2010.

* Jesus Soto-Karass – I’m not surprised Jones lost to him. I saw the fight and I was way more impressed with Soto-Karass, who I don’ consider a very good fighter, than I was with Jones.

* Chris Gray

* Roberto Garcia – He’s the guy that Antonio Margarito beat not long ago.

* Freddy Hernandez – A fighter that Andre Berto blew out in one round.

* Alfonso Gomez – He was destroyed by WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez last year.

* Luciano Perez

* Favio Medina

Hearn keeps saying he’s going to match Brook up against big names and instead we get Matthew Hatton, and now possibly Jones. I think the day that Brook faces a big name will be the day he fights for a title and likely loses badly. I don’t see Jones as being in the same class as guys like Mike Jones, Andre Berto, Victor Ortiz, Devon Alexander and Randall Bailey. And of course he’s not in the same league as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
