Is Mayweather good for boxing?

Image: Is Mayweather good for boxing?By Dallan O’ Donnell: Unbeaten pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather has always been the same trash talking exuberant enigma his entire career. He often has little good to say about opponents and lives a flashy lifestyle surrounded by the “money team”, his best friend 50 Cent and an over-sized security team fit for the president of the U.S. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not downing Mayweather.

He has worked for what he has and deserves to do as he pleases, even if that is gambling his vast fortune. Although in the ring he is undoubtedly one of the greatest ever, why is his personal life so out of control at times? He is facing time behind bars come June 1st on a battery charge of his ex-girlfriend for which he will spend 90 days in Clark County.

Is it the people that he surrounds himself with? Has he mixed with the wrong crowd? So my question to fans is: is Mayweather good for boxing? Surely you would say no, right? He is hardly a role model for young people. He hardly sets a good example for kids. He has, in the past shown fellow fighters no respect at all.

Even last year he showed no respect to veteran boxing commentator Larry Merchant when he called for the 80 year old to be fired by HBO, in an alteration that will be remember for years, although mainly for merchants response. But you could not be more wrong. However you look at Mayweather one thing he is not is bad for boxing. He is the PPV King. He is must watch T.V. he is a role model. Maybe not outside the ring but in the ring he certainly is. He works hard. He has dedicated himself to the sport and had shown that with perseverance and hard work you can have what Mayweather has.

Despite his trash talking and his lack of respect to opponents he gives fans someone who we love to hate. He is the typical pantomime villain. I’m sure most people who read this will want Miguel Cotto to knock him out on May 5th. Mayweather loves the hate. He feeds off any energy from crowds. When he does retire, for good this time, there will be a gaping hole that needs to be filled, not talent wise but entertainment wise. Boxing will survive without Mayweather and Mayweather will survive without boxing but combining the two gives that something special for the fans. Follow me on Twitter @dallan09
