Image: Fury has to dominate 40-year-old Rogan on Saturday to impress fansBy William Mackay: Tyson Fury (17-0, 12 KO’s) is convinced that boxing fans will be impressed with him when and if he beats 40-year-old Martin Rogan (14-2, 7 KO’s)on Saturday night at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In fact, Fury is so convinced that fans will be wowed by a win over Rogan that he sees in his minds eye fans clamoring for him to fight the Klitschko brothers after this bout.

In other words, a win over Rogan, a 2nd tier fighter at best, will be enough for boxing fans to start pushing for a Fury-Klitschko fight. Fury has things backwards in his head, because he’s picked the wrong kind of opponent for him to get any credit for afterwards. It’s slightly possible that Fury can win a lot of praise for beating Rogan, but it would have to be an early KO, like in the 1st round. It’s got to be early for Fury to get credit.

If Rogan is allowed to make it the full distance or if he gives Fury any kind of trouble with his power, then Fury will come out of the fight smelling like a skunk. It’ll work against him that’s for sure. This is why it doesn’t pay off to fight guys like Rogan if you’re trying to win fans and accomplish a goal.

There’s no real upside for beating someone like Rogan when you’re supposed to be a world class fighter. Fury needs to try and take him out as fast as possible before Rogan has had a chance to get his offense started up, because if he can pull off a win over Fury, it would be a huge upset.

Fury was knocked down in his last fight against 2nd tier fighter Neven Pajkic in the 2nd round after getting tagged to the head with a big right hand. Although Fury was game enough to get up and put Pajkic down in the next round, it isn’t a good sign that Fury was knocked down by a light hitter like Pajkic. That tells you that Fury has a chin problem. Additionally, Fury was hurt in his fight before that against another second tier fighter Nicolai Firtha. Like in the Pajkic fight, Fury was able to recover and continue on to get the stoppage, but it’s certainly not a good sign that Fury is getting knocked about by fighters in the 2nd tier range. When you see things like that it tells you that a fighter likely doesn’t have the goods to cut it at the upper level.
