Image: DeGale gives Groves a good chance at beating StieglitzBy Scott Gilfoid: EBU super middleweight champion James DeGale is giving George Groves (14-0, 11 KO’s) a good shot at beating WBO super middleweight paper champion Robert Stieglitz (41-2, 23 KO’s) in their fight next month on May 5th at the Messenhalle, in Erfurt, Germany. I think DeGale has a case wishful thinking, because it would make things easier for him if Groves wins this fight because he’ll have an easier chance of fighting him than Stieglitz.

DeGale told the Dailystar.co.uk “He’s [Groves] got a good chance of beating Stieglitz, who has been knocked out every tine he has stepped up a level and has got a padded record. A rematch with Groves would be massive in Britain for whatever title.”

Talk about your padded records. Both DeGale AND Groves have padded records. Neither guy has fought top tier opposition unless you count their fight against each other last year, and I don’t. Both of those guys still have to prove that they’re worthy of being ranked in the top 15, and I’m still waiting for them to beat a quality fighter.

Stieglitz is a lot better than the guys that Groves has been fighting his entire career and he’s a much better offensive fighter than Groves. Stieglitz can throw a lot of punches and really put it on his opponents. He’s not someone that runs around the ring with his hands down by his sides faking like he’s going to throw something and then doesn’t all night long. He’s into throwing shots and is a heck of a lot more exciting to watch than seeing a typical Groves fight in my view. I’m not into all that those feints Groves uses. You just want to shake the guy and say ‘Will just let your hands go?’

DeGale is hoping to get a rematch with Groves. I think he’s wasting his time because even if he gets one, it will happen in the UK and the crowd will likely be fully on Groves side. What this means is DeGale can probably dominate Groves and still lose the fight. If I’m DeGale I wouldn’t agree to ever fight Groves again in the UK. It’s not worth it if you’re going to be getting booed 24/7 while Groves is cheered for every missed punch. DeGale is just setting himself up to fail if he fights Groves in the UK again, because I can’t see him ever getting a decision against him over there.
