Image: Brook could have fought Devon Alexander, but wanted him to come to the UK in JulyBy Scott Gilfoid: Dan Rafael is reporting that Kell Brook and his team couldn’t agree on a fight against former IBF/WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander, who they wanted to come to the UK to fight in Brook’s venue on July 7th. That would never work, of course, because Alexander just finished fighting on February 25th, and by the time they started talking with Brook’s people for a fight, there wasn’t enough time to adequately train for a fight in July.

Alexander and his team countered with an August 18th date in the United States, which didn’t interest Brook’s team. I guess they’re not willing to come to the U.S to take on one of the best welterweights in the division. It’s a good thing, though, because Alexander would likely box Brook’s ears off and easily beat him by a lopsided decision. Alexander is way too fast and powerful for a fighter like Brook.

By why isn’t Brook interested in coming to the U.S? I know his promoter Eddie Hearn is trying to build an attraction in the UK by keeping Brook fighting over there in front of large crowds against 2nd tier fodder. Alexander would probably ruin Hearn’s attraction by making a mess of Brook and exposing him for his lack of hand speed, stamina and boxing ability. Alexander would nullify Brook’s offense just as easily he did recently with Marcos Maidana.

Yep, it looks like Alexander was too dangerous for Brook from the looks of it. I didn’t figure Hearn and Brook would ever go for a fight against Alexander. Too dangerous and too much of a departure from the god awful opponents that Brook has been fight for the past eight years. You can’t go from the guys that Brook has been fighting to a 1st tier star in the making like Alexander overnight. It’s going to be worked up to. I’d say if Brook keeps up at the pace he’s been at, he should be ready to fight someone like Alexander in another three to five years.
