Image: Hearn: Kell Brook will be back in Sheffield in the summer for a big fightBy William Mackay: Undefeated welterweight contender Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn, of Matchroom Sport, says that he’s going to bring the 25-year-old Brook back to Sheffield for his next bout in the summer in what Hearn says will be a big fight.

Hearn said after Brook’s 12 round decision win over Hatton last night “We’re going to come back to Sheffield in the summer for a big, big fight…He [Brook] didn’t come out of 1st gear. He’s got five gears.”

This is interesting because Hearn supposedly was finally ready to have Brook step up for the first time in his eight year pro career for his next bout, but with the fight taking place in Sheffield, this suggests that Hearn is going to look for local fighters to pool from for Brook’s next fight. It’s possible that Hearn could lure a big name over to the UK if he waves enough money under their noses but I don’t kind of doubt it. I can’t see any of the big names like Victor Ortiz, Andre Berto, Mike Jones, and Devon Alexander being willing to come to the UK to fight Brook and risk getting jobbed. And, of course, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao would never come there.

You have to wonder what Hearn considers a “Big, big fight,” because he thought the Hatton-Brook fight was a big fight. It may have been big for the UK, but it didn’t register a blip on the world radar screen. Boxing fans knew it was a hopeless mismatch going into the fight and sure enough that’s exactly what it was. It was a poor product if you’re looking to win fans long term. Setting up mismatches to make money may bring a good short term return but at the expense of turning off fans to the sport. Last night’s fight was very, very boring to watch and it never did get interesting.

So from there you have to wonder what Hearn is talking about when he’s getting excited about Brook fighting in Sheffield in the summer. What big name will agree to go there? I guess they could get 40-year-old Shane Mosley to possibly come over after he loses to WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez on May 5th, but Hearn would have to make it for the tail end of the summer for Mosley to possibly recover from his loss to Alvarez. I see that as a fight about the equivalent of the Hatton fight, because Mosley is completely shot. What other big names are going to be willing to go to Sheffield? I can’t think of any. My guess is Hearn picks out another easy mark for Brook to fight so he can keep winning for a little while longer.
