Allan Green needs to be first to beat Mikkel Kessler

Image: Allan Green needs to be first to beat Mikkel KesslerBy Scott Gilfoid: I’m giving light heavyweight contender Allan Green (31-3, 21 KO’s) a decent chance of beating former super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (44-2, 33 KO’s) on May 19th at the Parken, in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Green is going to have to take a page out of the playbook created by Andre Ward by getting his punches off first each time and really committing to them. Green can’t wait on Kessler to see what he’s going to do because he’ll be jabbing Green to pieces if he lets him. Green has to attack and not let up. That’s how he got in trouble in the Super Six tournament by letting his opponents lead the way.

Green and Kessler, both around the same age, are fighting for the WBC Silver light heavyweight title.

The Silver strap is one of the World Boxing Council’s fairly new creations but it’s not important. The main thing is that Green or Kessler has to get the win and move on to bigger and better things in the division. Kessler, 33, is eying a fight against the winner of the April 28th Bernard Hopkins vs. Chad Dawson rematch. That’s something interesting to aspire to for Kessler, but I think he’s barking up the wrong tree.

Those guys are REALLY good. Even if Kessler somehow is able to get past Green on the 19th of May, it’s going to be one of those fights that really depletes Kessler to the point where he might need to take another year off from boxing to lick his wounds in order to heal up for a potential Dawson or Hopkins fight. At this point another year off from boxing would probably pretty much finish off Kessler’s career.

Look at this way: Kessler already looked like a faded fighter when the talented Andre Ward took care of him in a dominating 11th round technical decision win in 2009. Since then, Kessler has only fought twice, beating Carl Froch and Mehdi Boudla. Kessler took 14 months off after the Froch fight before coming back against Boudla.

Kessler has now been out of the ring nine months and will have been out of action for 11 months by the time he starts throwing against Green. That’s another lost year of his career. Now can you imagine Kessler losing another year on top of that after the Green fight? I can.

I see something breaking down on Kessler from this fight. Kessler’s hands are brittle and we already saw how his eye got messed up. Something is going to go wrong with Kessler, believe me, and then we won’t see him coming back for a long time. Heck, he might as well retire if he’s going to miss another year.
