Image: Fedchenko gets his big chance against Marquez on April 14thBy Jason Kim: No.5 WBO 140 pound contender Serhiy Fedchenko (30-1, 13 KO’s) gets the biggest shot of his 10 year pro career against 38-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KO’s) in their fight for the interim World Boxing Organization (WBO) light welterweight title at the New Mexico City Arena, Mexico City, Mexico.

This will be a home fight for Marquez, so Fedchenko won’t be able to count on getting any support from the boxing fans. Fedchenko will need to make it on his own because there will be few Fedchenko fans in the crowd to give him support against easily the best opponent of his career.

Fedchenko hasn’t been put in with too many dangerous opponents in his career, and you can arguably say that his fight with Kaizer Mabuza mounts to being the toughest fight of Fedchenko’s career. He lost that fight by a 12 round majority decision but he did give Mabuza some problems in the process of getting beaten.

Marquez is going after the interim WBO title to pick up anther title to add to his collection while at the same time being near the weight class that Manny Pacquiao fights in. Marquez is hoping to get one more final fight against Pacquiao before he retires from the sport. The fight against Fedchenko is just a preliminary bout that will lead to a summer fight against former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios at the Cowboys’ stadium in Arlington, Texas. That’s going to be a good fight for Marquez and will help set up his hoped for fourth fight against Pacquiao.

Marquez must be pretty certain that he’ll get the fourth fight against Pacquiao, because otherwise it makes no sense for him to be doing Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum a big favor by fighting one of his stable fighters Rios, who isn’t even close to being as popular as Marquez. This won’t be one of those cases where the young lion tears apart an old toothless lion, though, because Marquez still has a lot left in the tank, enough to where he takes care of Rios without too many problems.

Fedchenko has to be more offensive minded if he wants to have a chance at beating Marquez. He won’t get anywhere with his hit and retreat style of fighting.
