According to RingTV, Schaefer still wants to match Guerrero up against Mayweather but just this time. Schaefer will likely go with a more marketable fighter than Guerrero in 21-year-old Saul Alvarez, even though Guerrero has accomplished far more in his career than Alvarez has at this point. It’s all about show business and Alvarez is the guy right now that puts fans in the seats and will likely give Mayweather a big boost in pay per view sales on Cinco de Mayo with millions of Mexican boxing fans celebrating the holiday by watching boxing on television.

Schaefer told RingTV “Do I think [Guerrero] has a very good chance of beating Mayweather? Yes. Do I think he will eventually get the Mayweather fight? Absolutely. There is a progression when a fight happens, and that just doesn’t seem to be the case right now. Mayweather is looking at other options. Mayweather’s his own boss, and he’s going to decide on who he wants to fight.”

Guerrero, 29, can really help himself if he moves up in weight from the lightweight division to at least the light welterweight division. When you’re talking about matching up a guy that fights not one but two entire divisions below Mayweather, it just doesn’t seem like an appealing fight.

When you add to that the fact that Guerrero recently tore up his left rotator cuff and had surgery on it, which just makes it even worse. Talk about bad timing. Guerrero needs to prove that he’s still same fighter he was before the injury before they start talking about matching him up with Mayweather.
