Image: Can "Big" John McDermott beat David Price, the British Klitschko?By Scott Gilfoid: Big John McDermott (26-7, 17 KO’s) has a tough task ahead of him against unbeaten David Price ((11-0, 9 KO’s), the British Klitschko, later on this month on January 21st in a British heavyweight title eliminator bout at the Olympia in Liverpool.

McDermott, 31, is expected to be out of his class in this one both in size and in the power department. It’s going to be really tough for McDermott to get a win here because Price has outstanding power, speed to go along with his 6’8” frame. He’s a lot like Wladimir Klitschko with his stork-like frame, huge power and fragile chin.

That vulnerability in the chin department will give McDermott a decent chance of winning this fight if he comes out throwing everything he has in the first couple of rounds. That’s the key in beating Price. You can’t let him control the fight in the first two rounds or you’re pretty much a goner.

Price knocks out a lot of his opposition in the first two rounds and does well when he’s got someone that’s laying off and letting him pick them apart. However, McDermott can certainly win this fight if he comes at Price in the same way that Italian 2008 Olympic super heavyweight Gold medalist Roberto Cammarelle did in stopping Price in the 2nd round.

Cammarelle showed no respect or fear of Price and went right at him in the 1st round, nailing him with big left hands and rights to the head. Price looked badly hurt from a left to the head in the 1st that twisted his headgear around sideways and had him ready to go.

In the 2nd round, Cammarelle continued his domination, tagging Price with big shots and staying on a constant attack. Cammarelle seemed to recognize that if he let off on Price, he’d have problems with his power. He did get hit with a couple of big shots from Price in the 2nd but instead of backing off, Cammarelle went right after Price and tagged him with a big left hand that sent Price falling into the ropes. The referee halted the fight then and you can make an argument that he stopped it too soon, but Price was really getting lit up here and he was going to get torn apart by Cammarelle had the ref let the fight continue.

But what Cammarelle did with Price is something that McDermott is capable of doing if he fights all out like Cammarelle did. That’s the best way to beat Price. He’s too big to let him fight on the outside and you can’t let him set the pace of the fight because he’ll pick you apart.

Price’s fragile is his weak spot and if I’m McDerott, I’m going to go all out in the first two rounds and leave nothing on the table. If it doesn’t work then at least he tried. McDermott has no chance of beating Price if he takes his time and tries to box the guy like other fighters have tried to do unsuccessfully. It’s all or nothing for McDermott in this fight.
