Image: Trout beats Laporte in mismatch on ShowtimeBy Dan Ambrose: Photo credit: Casino/Showtime – In a fight that should have never been showed on Showtime, WBA World light middleweight champion Austin Trout (24-0, 14 KO’s) easily defeated number #14 ranked World Boxing Association contender Frank Laporte (15-5-2, 7 KO’s) on Friday night at the Cohen Stadium in El Paso, Texas.

Laporte, 33, looked as if he’d never boxed before as he charged forward with no defense all night long, walking into shot after shot from Trout. In the opening round, Trout knocked the awkward Laporte down with a left hand when Laporte literally walked into the shot. From there, the southpaw Trout unloaded everything but the kitchen sink in trying to finish off Laporte. However, Trout, who’s not a big puncher, couldn’t finish off Laporte no matter how many unanswered shots he landed.

In the rounds 2nd through six, it was all Trout landing pretty much at will against a guy that really shouldn’t have been in the same ring with Trout. Why Showtime agreed to air this fight is the big question, because this fight promised to be a mismatch even before it was made. You’d think that Showtime would have a keener eye in agreeing to show competitive fights instead of ones where a champion is defending his title against a bottom ranked contender. It was a bad night for boxing fans if you’re into watching competitive fights because Laporte was really out of his class in this fight.

The win made Trout look a lot better than he really is. Don’t get me wrong, Trout is a decent paper champion, but he’s not in the class of Saul Alvarez and Miguel Cotto. I think guys like James Kirkland would destroy him. The win over Laporte showed that Trout is good when facing a slow guy with minimal boxing skills who can’t punch back. But we saw Trout’s limitations in his last fight against David Lopez when Trout was hurt in that fight late.

With this win, Trout know has to face his number #1 challenger Anthony Mundine in his next fight. That’s a bout I wouldn’t mind Showtime putting on but please no more Trout-Laporte type fights. That’s a disservice to boxing fans.
