Image: Mayweather in the dark about fight with PacquiaoBy Jason Kim: Floyd Mayweather Jr. is supposedly interested in facing Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas in the first quarter of 2012. However, this is news to Mayweather himself, who told the Wall Street Journal when asked about a fight against Pacquiao, “Pacquiao? I didn’t even know I was fighting him?”

This suggests that Mayweather has no interest in fighting Pacquiao next and will likely look for another target for his next fight. This comes off of news earlier in the week when Mayweather’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe said that Mayweather wants to look for the biggest fight in May 2012, and Pacquiao is someone they would like to fight. But with Mayweather acting like he doesn’t even know about this talk, it’s not a good sign for a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.

Even under the best of circumstances putting a fight together between Floyd and Pacquiao would seem to be nearly impossible due to the Olympic style random blood tests that Mayweather wants before he’ll agree to fight the Filipino fighter. Although Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum seem to be on the same page as Mayweather, there are still things that could keep the fight from coming off if Mayweather insists on Pacquiao staying in the U.S during the entire training camp. Besides this, the money split, ring size, gloves and weight penalties are all issues that could trip up the fight. Last time Pacquiao and Mayweather were close to fighting, Pacquiao’s team wanted a huge weight penalty for the fight. Mayweather shockingly agreed to it, but the fight fell apart when Pacquiao wouldn’t agree to have blood testing within the last three weeks of the fight.
