Audley Harrison: A win over Tyson Fury could get me a world title fight

Image: Audley Harrison: A win over Tyson Fury could get me a world title fightBy Scott Gilfoid: 40-year-old Audley Harrison (27-5, 20 KO’s) is convinced that all he needs to do to get a world title shot is to beat the tall and sadly inexperienced fringe contender Tyson Fury (16-0, 11 KO’s) and that will get Harrison a world title shot against one of the Klitschko brothers of the WBA paper champion Alexander Povetkin.

Speaking with Sky Sports Ringside, Harrison said “The Klitschkos are so desperate looking for challengers. If I fought Tyson Fury for the British and Commonwealth titles that could potentially get me a [world] title shot. I want the biggest risk for the most reward. I’d like one more shot. If I lose or get injured, I’m done.”

It sounds like a sad, sad pipe dream to me. First of all, Harrison isn’t going to get that fight that he wants against Fury. The handlers for Fury are being ever so careful with him and are steering him away from guys that can punch. Harrison maybe old and rusty as heck from inactivity, but he’s got enough power in his left hand to knock Fury’s lights out. We’ve already seen Fury staggered in back to back fights against non-punchers Dereck Chisora and Nicolai Firtha.

You think Fury’s management want to mess things up with the potential Fury gravy train by putting him in with someone that can actually hit hard?

I really don’t think a win over Fury would get Harrison a title shot anyway. Fury hasn’t proven one thing other than he can beat 2nd tier opposition. Beating that guy will only additional hurdles in front of Harrison that he’ll need to surpass if he wants his big money cash out fight against one of the Klitschko brothers.

Harrison had his world title shot against David Haye last year and totally blew it, throwing one pitiful punch in getting stopped in the 3rd round.
