Image: Floyd vs. Ortiz: Boxing lessons will be delivered and a message sentBy Babatis Banda: 17th of September, one of the best and gifted fighters of our time gets into the ring to face a young, strong, hungry and determined fighter in the name of Victor Ortiz.

Another important element to note is that, Ortiz is coming off a big win over one of the best fighters in the division, to face Floyd Mayweather Junior a gifted pure boxer coming off a long, one and a half years lay-off. It is also important to note that Floyd has been inactive for combined long periods of time fighting only a handful of fights in as many years. The choice of Victor at this point considering his age, and that Floyd is approaching the 40’s compounded by his inactivity makes this fight very interesting and dangerous too.

This fight does not deserve to carry the ‘tune-up’ tag, it will be as tough as it can be, and Floyd and team must be commended for this choice, a real test. However, my personal feeling remains that Floyd will win this fight. If Floyd will not show any ring rust or effects of aging like Mosley, it may be a long, punishing night for one Victor Ortiz.

Floyd will want to send a message to the doubting mind that he is still one of the greatest there can ever be in this sport. Floyd is going to use this moment to deliver a message, to the ghost (Manny) that has haunted him so terribly. I have no doubt in my mind that Manny Pacquiao is the man on the back of Floyd’s mind and he needs to be exorcized of this ghost.

Either way, clear lessons will be learnt, either that Floyd is the unbeatable machine or that no one can defy ‘father time’. Whichever way, a message will be sent to Packman, that Floyd remains the man to beat, or there is no need to really worry, he can take the test and still not risk losing his new found place in boxing. This fight could just be the yard stick, and probably the fight we need to finally get the ultimate….Floyd Vs Manny.
