Martirosyan: I still haven’t been contacted by Angulo’s promoter about a fight

Image: Martirosyan: I still haven't been contacted by Angulo's promoter about a fightBy Dan Ambrose: After junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (20-1, 17 KO’s) defeated little known Joseph Gomez last week, Angulo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions crowed long and hard, saying that Angulo would be fighting undefeated number #1 ranked WBC junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (30-0, 19 KO’s) next.

However, Martirosyan is saying that he still hasn’t been contacted by De La Hoya or anyone from Golden Boy Promotions about fighting Angulo.

Martirosyan said this on his twitter: “All this talk. I’ll believe it when I see it. Oscar De La Hoya, if you want my number to call, let me know, I’m waiting. Left-right and uppercut. I’m waiting and I haven’t gotten your phone call yet. Yawn!”

Could it be that De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions are having second thoughts about risking their new fighter Angulo by putting him in with the boxer/puncher Martirosyan? I wouldn’t be surprised because Angulo was already easily beaten by Kermit Cintron two years ago in a one-sided 12 round decision loss. All Cintron did was use a little movement and a steady jab and he made Angulo look really bad. Martirosyan is a better version of Cintron in my view and I can see him making Angulo look really bad.

The problem Angulo has is he’s not fast. He lacks hand speed and moves slowly around the ring, much too slowly to beat a guy like Martirosyan. I think this would be a mismatch. Angulo missed his window when he sat out for the last year and did nothing. He probably would have captured one of the titles if he had been busy during that time instead of just sitting. Not I think the window is shut for the time being. Angulo won’t beat WBC champion Saul Alvarez and he won’t get past Martirosyan. He won’t even get a chance at fighting WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. It’s basically out of luck.
