Image: Is Mayweather playing head games about fighting Khan?By John F. McKenna (McJack): To say that Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KO’s) is a very complex individual would be an understatement. Floyd undoubtedly enjoys all the media attention he gets in the lead up to one of his fights. Floyd is used to being in the limelight and is a master at manipulating the media.

He knows full well that any comment he makes about a possible future fight, will create a stir among boxing fans and writers who cover his every move. It is almost humorous the way the media reacts to a comment Floyd makes on a given day and on the next day is contradicted by another Mayweather comment.

Recently Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer spoke at length with rising super star IBF/WBO light welterweight champion Amir “King” Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s). Khan is fresh off of his impressive 5th round knockout win over former IBF light welterweight champion Zab Judah. Khan spoke to Schaefer of his desire to have one more fight at 140 pounds and then move up to the welterweight division where he would eventually fight Floyd Mayweather.

Originally “Money” seemed to be receptive to the idea of a fight with Amir Khan. When Khan was in Las Vegas preparing for his fight with Judah, Floyd invited Amir’s English fans into his Las Vegas gym to watch him train. It was thought that Mayweather was sending a signal that he might be interested in fighting Khan.

Floyd also recently let it be known that he thought that he could fill a soccer stadium in England and that he would like to fight in Wembley Stadium. To fill Wembley Stadium though, he would need an Englsish fighter, someone with a high profile like Amir Khan.

Later on however, Mayweather as is frequently the case, switched gears and said that he did not think Amir Khan would bring in enough people. Saying that Amir Khan, would not be a big enough draw left even pro Mayweathher fans scratching their heads. It is pretty well a foregone conclusion that Khan could sell out the 85,000 seat capacity Wembley Stadium and a lot of other venues in England.

Where was Floyd going with his latest comments? Other than Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Floyd Mayweather would be the biggest draw in boxing. Were his latest conflicting comments just a case of Floyd wanting to keep everyone off balance? It could also be that Floyd himself is not sure what his next move is going to be and who he really wants to fight.

At 34 years old even the great Floyd Mayweather will soon be slowing down, if only by a fraction of a second. Amir Khan at 24 years old is improving with each fight and will continue to improve. He can afford to wait a year or a year and a half. Floyd Mayweather does not have that luxury. Time is not on his side.
