Fury’s next fight only three weeks away and still no opponent

Image: Fury's next fight only three weeks away and still no opponentBy William Mackay: Things aren’t looking good for British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Tyson Fury’s next fight on September 17th at the Kings Hall, Belfast, Northern Ireland. With only three weeks to go before his fight next month there isn’t even a hint of an opponent picked out.

Supposedly, Fury’s management contacted the following fighters to see if they were interested in facing Fury: David Price and Mike Perez. I hope Fury hasn’t lost his nerve.

Price is saying Fury’s people never called, and you have to wonder whether the same is true for Perez. Fury wanted to fight 40-year-old Martin Rogan, but he didn’t like the money that was offered. And Fury’s promoter isn’t interested in a heavyweight that does want to fight Fury, 39-year-old Audley Harrison. That seems like a reasonable pick for Fury, don’t you think?

If Perez, Price, and Rogan aren’t going to get the fight, then why not Harrison? It’s starting to look as if boxing fans are going to be seeing Fury back in with a really low quality fighter, maybe another C level guy. What a waste. The fight is going to be televised in the UK, and you would expect Fury’s management wanting to get the best possible opponent so that they can keep raising Fury’s popularity rather than diminishing it by having him go back to fighting lesser guys.

Fury showed that he’s ready to face quality heavyweights in his last fight against Dereck Chisora, which Fury won by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision in July. But ever since then, Fury has been talking about wanting to win the Irish heavyweight title. I don’t know of too many people that care about seeing Fury win that obscure title. I

t’s like what for? I think Fury is missing the big picture here and thinking really small instead of big time. I can see some cabdriver being found to step into the ring against Fury on September 17th and a lot of fans ending up angry seeing Fury beat up on a guy that had no business fighting him in the first place.
