Image: Froch-Ward: Carl starting training camp at 175 lbs for Super Six finalsBy Scott Gilfoid: World Boxing Council (WBC) super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KO’s) is entering training camp for his October 29th fight against unbeaten World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight champion Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KO’s) already only seven pounds over the 168 pound limit for the super middleweight division.

This is what I was afraid of. Froch is too light, and is going to be out-weighed, out-muscled and out-hustled by the talented Ward in this fight at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The tall skinny 6’2” Froch is usually the bigger guy in his fights, but it looks like he’s not been eating enough lately.

He’s probably been worrying himself sick ever since he made it to the finals of the Super Six tournament. Froch can’t afford to come in low for this fight. The guy needs all the muscle he can because Ward is going to be roughing him up all night long the same way he did in his fights against Allan Green and Mikkel Kessler in the tourney.

Froch must have stayed in training camp after beating 42-year-old Glen Johnson in his last fight, because there’s no way he should be so close to 168 this early. By the time Froch gets down with his training camp, he’ll be lucky if he weighs 160 lbs. Ward could have a weight advantage in the neighborhood of 10 to 20 pounds in this fight depending on how much weight Froch pares off during his preparation to get ready for Ward. I don’t know. Maybe it doesn’t matter.

Look, even if Froch does come in at the perfect weight for this fight, we’re still talking about a huge gulf in talent between him and Ward that goes beyond weight. Ward is just in another level altogether in terms of talent and boxing ability. Froch is Froch, He’s a good against certain types of fighters like Brian Magee, Arthur Abraham and Glen Johnson. In other words, the slower fighters in the super middleweight division. Froch struggles against guys with speed, as we saw in his life and death battle against Andre Dirrell and Kessler.
