Image: De La Hoya says he's not making a comebackBy Chris Williams: For those who care about Oscar De La Hoya news, the 38-year-old former Olympic Gold Medalist and six-time world champion says he won’t be staging a comeback. There had been rumors that De La Hoya was looking to make a comeback but it looks like it’s just another one of those false rumors related to Oscar.

This is probably a relief to a lot of boxing fans because De La Hoya looked awful in his last fight three years ago, losing by an 8th round TKO to Manny Pacquiao. De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KO’s) lost three out of his last five fights and probably should have lost four out of his last five, because pretty much no one thought he deserved the 12 round decision over Felix Sturm in 2004 before facing Bernard Hopkins.

De La Hoya had been on serious decline for the previous five years before hanging up the gloves in 2008. Some fighters start to fade early in their careers and De La Hoya was one of them, as he went into decline a little past his 30th birthday. This could be from a lot of the hard fights he had been in or just maybe he lost his interest in fighting due to the success and huge paydays he was getting.

De La Hoya’s biggest fights of his career were against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley [x2], Bernard Hopkins and Felix Trinidad and he lost all six of those fights. When De La Hoya stepped it up against really good fighters, he pretty much lost most of the time it’s sad to say.

De La Hoya’s best wins came against a slightly depleted Fernando Vargas, an old Julio Cesar Chavez, Oba Carr, Ike Quartey, an older Hector Camacho, an older Pernell Whitaker, Miguel Angel Gonzalez, David Kamau, Jesse James Leija, John John Molina, Genaro Hernandez, Rafael Ruelas, Arturo Gatti and Ricardo Mayorga.
