Mayweather faces World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) on September 17th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Mayweather Jr. is reportedly looking really good in training camp.

According to news from examiner.com, Mayweather has been “Beating up” his sparring partners, says his trainer/uncle Roger Mayweather. That’s a good sign because when Mayweather is beating his sparring partners with ease, he always wins without any problems. Ortiz is one of the toughest tests for Mayweather Jr since his bout with Oscar De La Hoya in 2007. Ortiz might in fact be even more dangerous than De La Hoya, because of Ortiz’s southpaw stance, quick hands, youth and huge power.

De La Hoya was nearing the end of his career when he fought and lost to Mayweather in May 2007. Mayweather has only fought three times since then, beating Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez and Shane Mosley. I suppose that’s a big plus for the young Ortiz, because he could be getting a ring rusty Mayweather in this fight. It goes without saying that Ortiz is a much more dangerous fighter than Mosley was, because Mosley had little left in the tank when he fought Mayweather last year.

Mayweather needs a win over Ortiz to keep alive his hopes of one day fighting Manny Pacquiao. The fight could happen next year if Pacquiao would just agree to Mayweather’s wishes for him to take the USDA Olympic style drug tests to check for performance enhancing drugs. However, it’s doubtful that Pacquiao will agree to these tests, as his promoter Bob Arum wants Pacquiao to take tests from a different agency and Mayweather probably won’t agree to this.
