Froch: I’m going to knock Ward out

By Scott Gilfoid: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KO’s) is already unleashing the dogs of war with his comments to the BBC, saying he’s going to knock WBA Super World super middleweight champion Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KO’s) out in the finals of the Super Six tournament on October 29th at the Atlantic City, New Jersey.

However, unlike his recently disgraced fellow countryman former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye, few boxing experts see as having the talent to beat Ward, let alone knock him out. Froch is talking but without the same kind of credibility that Haye had going into his fight with Klitschko.

Froch hasn’t been knocking anyone out in the Super Six tournament and has been either losing or struggling in most of his fights. He did get an easy win over the smallish Arthur Abraham, but that was a fighter who had lost his previous bout against the talented Andre Dirrell and that loss seemed to take a lot of the spirit out of Abraham.

Froch said this to the BBC Sport: “I’m going to knock him [Ward] out. He’s not a big puncher. I’m a guy to put him on his back foot. It’s going to shock the world. It’s a fight I know I can win. I’m going to get under his skin and try and get him to come to me, and try to fight. That’s not going to be by trash talking; it’s going to be by telling him what I think of him, and what I strongly believe I can do to him.”

Let’s be real about this. Froch and Ward are on different levels. Froch is slow, lacks inside fighting ability and is easy to hit. Ward is a superb boxer with mad skills on both the outside and the inside. Ward will be able to pick whichever distance that suits him and do well against the slower Froch. This is a fight in which Ward has many different ways of beating Froch. For his part, Froch only has a puncher’s chance to win and even that’s not a good one because he’s not really a huge puncher.
