Image: Fernando Montiel vs. Nehomar Cermeño next SaturdayBy Gerardo Granados: Fernando “Ko-chulito” Montiel (T49-W44(34)-L3(1)-D2) gets back in action next Saturday 25th against Nehomar Cermeño (T23-W20(12)-L3(0)-D0) at the Banorte Stadium in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

It has been four months since Montiel lost his WBC – WBO bantamweight titles to Nonito Donaire by an impressive second round TKO and now the former three division champion is ready to start his quest for a fourth division championship.

Montiel is a 32 years old veteran who has engaged against top opposition thru his fourteen years boxing career. Now he aims to become the first Mexican fighter to achieve a world title in a fourth different weight division, a feat that also other fellow Mexican boxers are trying to accomplish. But it seems that Fernando is the only one who has a good chance to accomplish the goal. Juan Manuel Marquez has little chance to beat Manny Pacquiao at 144 pounds and conquer the WBO welterweight belt; Marco Antonio Barrera is practically retired; hall of fame Julio Cesar Chavez tried twice but draw against hall of fame Pernell Whitaker and was stopped by future hall of fame member Oscar De la Hoya; Erik Morales might have a chance to win his fourth if first is able to get a shot at any of the lightweight or light welterweight champions but his chances would depend on against who he would fight.

It is always good news to hear that a great fighter is back in action, Montiel was brutally stopped as other great boxers have in the past, lets see if he is able to get back on track and accomplish what no Mexican fighter has done, and that only two Latino fighters have done Venezuelan Leon “Torito” Gamez and legendary Panamanian Roberto “Manos de piedra” Duran.

It has not been reported if the WBC will grant Montiel a shot at the super bantamweight title but it is very probable that “Ko-chulito” will get his chance sooner or later, but first he has to defeat an experimented fighter who has good speed and power.

I wish the best luck to both fighters hoping that this will be a great fight that all boxing fans can enjoy. Wellcome back “Ko-chulito”!
