Bute and Hopkins hoped for fights for Froch if he beats Ward

By William Mackay: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch has a nearly impossible task of trying to beat the best fighter in the Super Six tournament WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward, who Froch faces in the finals of the tournament in a fight that will be taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada. Froch beat 42-year-old Glen Johnson in his last tournament fight to get to the finals against Ward.

If Froch can beat Ward, his promoter wants to put Froch in with either WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins or IBF super middleweight title holder Lucian Bute in a fight that could take place in the United States to take advantage of Froch’s popularity there. However, this is all dreams for the future and the chances of any of these fights actually taking place, other than the Ward bout, are remote at this point. Froch looked decent in beating Johnson, but showed tremendous problems with his defense and his hand speed. To put it lightly, Froch was painfully slow against Johnson and unable to block or get out of the way of Johnson’s infrequent right hands.

In an interview at the telegraph.co.uk, Eddie Hearn, the promoter for Froch, said “A stadium fight for Carl in Nottingham would be the obvious stage for a fight with Hopkins. But Carl is also highly regarded in American and Las Vegas could be an option.”

It’s premature at this point to be talking about fights that come after Ward when the chances aren’t good that Froch will win the Ward fight. Hearn might be better off listing two scenarios for fights for Froch. In the first scenario, Froch would have a little of opponents to face coming off a loss to Ward. And in the second scenario, opponents would be listed for a victorious Froch. Hopefully, Froch’s promoter doesn’t have tunnel vision when it comes to Froch and only sees a successful future when in reality, Froch will likely lose to Ward and probably badly.
