Image: Froch-Johnson: The winner of the fight will be Ward's next victimBy Scott Gilfoid: On June 4th, the next victim for WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KO’s) will finally be known when WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) faces 42-year-old Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KO’s) in their Super Six tournament semifinals bout at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Whoever emerges as the winner in this fight, they’ve basically got little chance of beating Ward in the finals of the Super Six tourney and will likely end up being dominated the same way that Arthur Abraham was in his one-sided 12 round decision loss to Ward last night in Carson, California. Froch is expected to beat Johnson, if only because he’s a lot younger at 33 compared to the 42-year-old Johnson.

However, Froch has looked horrible in three out of his last four bouts and is lucky not to have lost all but one of those fights. Froch was a mere 15 seconds away from losing a decision to Jermain Taylor in April 2009 when Froch was able to score a knockout with only seconds remaining in the fight. Had it gone the full 12, Froch would have lost on points. In Froch’s win over Andre Dirrell in October 2009, Froch missed with his punches all night long and ate a lot of jabs and was clearly out-boxed by Dirrell.

The referee ignored repeated fouls from Froch when he started roughing Dirrell up in the 5th and continued to foul until the 11th. I had Dirrell easily winning that fight. And then in Froch’s next fight, he was beaten by Mikkel Kessler by a 12 round decision last year in April. Froch was able to get a chance of lucky against Arthur Abraham, who was fighting out of his division and completely lost, by a 12 round decision last November. That was Froch’s one big win but it’s not really a big deal because Abraham was already beaten by Dirrell and has now been dominated by Ward.

Johnson has fought once in the Super Six tourney, beating Allan Green by an 8th round TKO last November. Johnson’s work rate and pressure was too much for Green and he ended up folding under the pressure. Now it’s Froch’s turn. He plans on changing his style completely and going from a pressure fighter and slugger to that of a boxer against Johnson. Froch obviously has seen enough of Johnson’s fights to know that it wouldn’t be wise to try and stand in front of this monstrous puncher and trade with him. Look for Froch to run all night long and look bad. I see this as a Johnson win.
