Image: Jones vs. Lebedev this Saturday in Russia: Look for Roy to be knocked coldBy Eric Thomas: 42-year-old Roy Jones Jr. (54-7, 40 KO’s) is taking an incredibly dangerous fight for him against southpaw cruiserweight contender Denis Lebedev (21-1, 16 KO’s) this Saturday night on May 21st at the Sport Complex Krylatskoe, in Moscow, Russia. When you see Jones taking fights like this you got to feel sorry for him, because Jones has no chance of winning.

Even recent Jones’ conquerors Bernard Hopkins and Danny Green would be hard put to beat a hard hitting guy like Lebedev. I’m not sure if Hopkins would lose to Lebedev but he would take a lot of punishment in the fight, as Lebedev is quick with his straight left hand and he’s hits really hard. Jones is asking for it by taking this fight, because Lebedev isn’t the type of fighter that you step in the ring with if you have chin issues like Jones does. Roy has been beaten in last two fights and hasn’t won a bout in two years since his win over Jeff Lacy in 2009.

Jones doesn’t move around like he used to. In his losses to Hopkins and Green, Jones seemed to be only able to shuffle around the ring like an old person with a walker. To beat Lebedev, Jones would need a good set of wheels, a fast jab and the ability to take his hard shots. If he were to be missing any one of these areas, Jones would lose. The problem here is that Jones is missing in all those areas. He can’t move, doesn’t jab and can’t take a punch. This is going to end badly for Jones with him being peeled off the canvas and likely carted out of the Russian arena. I sure hope he enjoys his stay in Moscow. It’s a nice play but very expensive.
