DeGale: Groves will be an easy win

By Sean McDaniel: For a lot of people, they see Saturday’s match-up between undefeated British super middleweight champion James DeGale (10-0, 8 KO’s) and challenger George Groves (12-0, 10 KO’s) as being a potentially close contest that can go either way.

But don’t try telling that to DeGale, who sees this fight as just another night at the office and a case where he’ll easily beat the younger Groves.

“An easy night’s work,” said DeGale in an article at the independent.co.uk. “I can’t see it going 12 rounds, seriously. I’m ranked with three of the major organizations so I’m up there in the top 15 of the world.”

DeGale may be right. Groves had problems in a recent fight against Kenny Anderson and was dropped to the canvas in that fight by a big shot from Anderson. Never mind that Groves was able to get up from the knockdown and go on to a stoppage.

Anderson made Groves look bad for enough rounds to where it’s difficult to see Groves beating a much better fighter than Anderson in DeGale. Groves has a lot to prove in this fight after that performance and unfortunately it just doesn’t like Groves has the talent needed to beat DeGale. Groves is a fine fighter but right now, he seems to be lagging behind DeGale a few steps and is going to need more time to develop before he can catch up to him – if that’s even possible.

Groves has been getting 1st class sparring during his training camp for this fight, but there’s only so much good sparring can do for you. You have to possess the talent to begin with for good sparring to really help much.

DeGale would likely beat the guys that Groves has been sparring with, including Andre Dirrell. That’s how good DeGale is right now. He’s a level above Groves and it’s going to take a major performance from Groves to be able to prove boxing fans wrong about him.
