Vitali to be huge step up for Adamek on Sep 10th

By William Mackay: Heavyweight Tomas Adamek (44-1, 28 KO’s) has captured titles in the light heavyweight and cruiserweight divisions. Since moving up to the heavyweight division in 2009, Adamek has been very selective about the kinds of opponents he’s faced.

It would be fair to say that many of Adamek’s opponents have been on the old side and on not quite they once were earlier in their career. Adamek has done well and has racked up six consecutive wins over the likes of Michael Grant, Andrew Golota, Chris Arreola, Jason Estrada, Vinny Maddalone and Kevin McBride.

The wins has gotten Adamek a title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO’s) on September 10th at the Stadion Miejski, Wroclaw, Poland. Unfortunately, this is where Adamek’s ride to the top ends, because he stands no chance of winning the fight unless Vitali suffers a major debilitating injury of some kind or another.

Adamek, 6’2” 215, is simply too small and too weak to have any chance of beating Vitali. It’s good that Adamek has been able to get a title shot based on the wins that he’s picked up, but also kind of sad at the same time because the fight with Vitali will be so lacking in entertainment value.

It’s going to be one-sided with Adamek running and trying to avoid getting hit by the monstrous 6’7” 250 pound Vitali. This is what you get when you have heavyweight contenders taking on weak opposition to get a title shot. They win a handful of fights, get the casual boxing fans interested in the fight, and then go out and get annihilated.

We’d likely have seen Adamek already eliminated from heavyweight title contention if he took on a top heavyweight contender like Denis Boytsov, Alexander Povetkin, Robert Helenius or Eddie Chambers. I would pick anyone of those heavyweights to beat Adamek and possibly Tony Thompson as well. Like I said, it’s good that Adamek has been able to get a title shot based on the limited wins he’s had but I don’t see him having any chance of winning. This is going to be a cash-out fight. It’s one and done.
