Morales vs. Barrera a possibility, Hatton comeback not happening

By Jason Kim: The rumors of Ricky Hatton coming back to face the 34-year-old Erik Morales (51-7, 36 KO’s) have proved to be premature. According to the mirror, Hatton has no immediate plans of making a comeback right now. He’s currently working as a promoter and seems to be quite happy working in that capacity. As for Morales, there is talk of him facing 37-year-old Marco Antonio Barrera (67-7, 44 KO’s) in what would likely be seen as an old timer’s fight between ex-world champions.

Barrera and Morales fought three times already with Barrera winning two of the three fights. However, the last time they fought was seven years ago way back in 2004. Neither fighter is what he used to be, especially Barrera. It’s a fight that would likely do well with the Mexican community but that’s about it. Barrera Hasn’t had much success in the last four years, losing to Juan Manuel Marquez, Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan. Barrera’s only wins during that period has come against B class competition, beating the likes of Sammy Ventura, Freudis Rojas, Adailton De Jesus and Jose Arias. Barrera last fought in February, beating Arias by a 2nd round TKO, but looking painfully slow of hand and foot.

Morales recently lost by a 12 round decision to slugger Marcos Maidana earlier this month on April 9th. Although Morales fought well at times, he tired in the later rounds and ended up losing the fight. His right eye was completely shut and he’s going to need time to heal from that injury, as well as the cut he sustained around the eye. Morales didn’t throw enough punches to win the fight and doesn’t seem capable of fighting hard for the full three minutes of every round like he used to be able to do in his prime years. He was still more than a handful for Maidana, but he clearly didn’t win the fight. Morales said that he wanted a rematch with Maidana after the fight, but that may have been just talk by Morales. He said the same thing after a disappointing performance against Willie Limond in 2010, yet he never fought Limond again.
