Image: Groves: Technically, I've got DeGale beat - I'm going to hurt himBy William Mackay: Unbeaten super middleweight Commonwealth champion George Groves (12-0, 10 KO’s) says he’s not going to fight with his emotions and won’t be coming after undefeated British super middleweight champion James DeGale (10-0, 8 KO’s) when they fight on May 21st at the O2 Arena, in London, England. Groves plans on staying away from DeGale rather than coming at him and slugging.

The two fighters met on Sky Sports’ Ringside on Thursday with Groves saying “Technically, I’ve got him beat. The only thing he can bank on is I fight with emotions. Look at his face, he’s stupid. He’s delusional. The things he says, his ego, his arrogance.”

DeGale fired back with “The guy has not improved, If anything, he’s gotten worse. I’ve changed leaps and bounds.”

Groves previously beat DeGale while they were both amateurs. However, DeGale has improved measurably since then, capturing the 2008 Olympic Gold medal for Britain, whereas Groves’ improvement has seemingly slowed down to the point where you can’t see nearly as much of an increase.

Groves said “He’s classless, he’s delusional, he’s got people around him pumping him up. I’m going to hurt him…His trainer will pull him out.”

Groves is aware that he’s the underdog in the fight, but he thinks he’s got the goods to win this fight with his skills. DeGale says he wants Groves to come at him so that the two can put on a good fight for the fans. DeGale says he doesn’t need Groves to come at him in order to beat him but just so that the fight is more interesting with both fighters slugging it out. Groves doesn’t seem at all interested in slugging with DeGale and is pretty much making it clear that he’s going to stay away from him and try to box instead of slug with him. It’s going to be difficult to beat DeGale using that strategy because he has longer arms and the better jab. Groves’ only chance is to come at DeGale and slug, because he probably won’t have much luck trying to box him.
