Image: Cleverly vs. Braehmer pushed back to 5/21: Does anyone really care?By Scott Gilfoid: The WBO clash between light heavyweight champion Jurgen Braehmer (36-2, 29 KO’s) and his Welsh challenger Nathan Cleverly (21-0, 10 KO’s) has been pushed back from April 2nd to May 21st at the Wembley Arena, in London, England. My question is does anyone really care too much about the fight being put off until later? I sure don’t. These guys aren’t the main focus in the light heavyweight division and the winner of the fight will be seen as a paper champion by many boxing fans.

The top guys at light heavyweight right now are Jean Pascal, Chad Dawson, Bernard Hopkins, Tavoris Cloud and to some extent Beibut Shumenov. Bringing up the rear is Braehmer and possibly Cleverly. As such, I’m not too bothered about this fight being moved from April to May. They could move it to December, and it still wouldn’t bother me much because those guys aren’t the ones that are being talked about.

Cleverly is limited plodder, a fighter that reminds me of the old timers from a different era. He’s done well against his Euro level opposition and he might even beat Braehmer, but who cares? Hopkins, Cloud, Pascal and Dawson are on another level and will make easy work of the one-paced Cleverly.

Former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli 32-5, 25 KO’s) could be fighting on the undercard, and presumably could be fighting the winner of this fight. Frankly, I hate that idea. Maccarinelli has lost four out of his last eight fights. How can that guy be given a title shot with that kind of poor record in his recent fights? I don’t care if he beats whatever scrub he’s put in with on May 21st. He still wouldn’t deserve to fight for the title. Somehow, I can see a lot of those types of fights for Cleverly should he beat Braehmer. This is why I’m hoping..No, I’m praying that Cleverly loses the fight to Braehmer, just so I don’t have to see those kinds of title-milking fights.
