Donaire vs. Moreno in unification bout on May 28th

By Chris Williams: Instead of moving on up in weight to look for better opponents, WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO’s) will likely be fighting a unification bout on May 28th against WBA World bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno (30-1-1, 10 KO’s), according to boxing news from the ringtv. It’s a fight that will likely make Donaire look bad, though, because Moreno isn’t one of Donaire’s typical short opponents, standing 5’8″, and he’s a southpaw that likes to move a lot.

Moreno doesn’t try and load up on his shots like Donaire’s knockout victims Vic Darchinyan and Fernando Montiel. I don’t see anything good coming of this fight for Donaire. I mean I think he’s going to win, because Moreno has no power and went life and death with Donaire knockout victim Wladimir Sidorenko in 2009, but Moreno is still someone that will likely make Donaire look kind of silly. Bob Arum, the promoter and guide for Donaire, should seriously consider not waiting time on beating this paper champion because for one boxing fans won’t care, because they’ve never heard of Moreno.

Why fight a guy that won’t build Donaire’s stock any? That doesn’t make sense. Moreno doesn’t have the fighting style that will make for a television friendly fight, and he doesn’t have the name to give Donaire a shot in the arm if/when he beats Moreno. It’s basically just a fight to add a paper title, and god, why does Donaire need another title? Boxing fans won’t suddenly fall in love with Donaire if he picks up another title against this paper champion.

Arum should forget about this fight and have Donaire move up in weight already to take on super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. Even that fight isn’t that interesting because Vazquez Jr. doesn’t have a fan base in the U.S., but I can kind of understand the fight in terms of picking up a new title in a different weight class. But I don’t see the appeal of facing Moreno. It’s time for Donaire to move on up in weight and not waste time spinning his gears at bantamweight where there are no appealing fights for him.
