Alvarez faces welterweight Hatton on Saturday for WBC junior middleweight title

By Scott Gilfoid: For some reason, EBU welterweight champion Matthew Hatton (41-4-2, 16 KO’s) is being allowed to fight for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title on Saturday night against #1 WBC contender Saul Alvarez (35-0-1, 26 KO’s) at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California. How the 29-year-old Hatton has gotten the shot is beyond me. Why is Hatton, a mere EBU welterweight champ, allowed to fight for the vacant WBC title when he’s never fought at junior middleweight in his life? That just seems so wrong.

How can Hatton be given the chance to fight for the title when you have established fighters like Alfredo Angulo, Erislandy Lara, and Vanes Martirosyan still waiting to get their shots at the title. Those guys at least have fought in the weight class and showed that they belong at this weight. Hatton is a feather-fisted welterweight. He has no chance of beating Alvarez and just seems to be a name because of his famous brother Ricky Hatton. Whatever.

Alvarez is going to beat Hatton black and blue on Saturday – that is, if Hatton doesn’t get knocked cold by the first punch he’s hit with. I see it kind of like that. Alvarez comes out fast, lands a big right hand, Hatton goes down immediately, and the stretcher is brought in to cart Hatton back to the dressing room. This is what you get when you take an unproven welterweight and put him in with one of the hardest punchers in the junior middleweight division.

They should have at least waited until Hatton had proven that he was even a good welterweight before throwing him in with Alvarez. Heck, Hatton hasn’t even shown that he can beat a world class upper tier welterweight. So how is he fighting for the WBC title then? This has the makings of a ritual slaughter. I just hope the end comes quick for Hatton. I don’t want to see him suffer.
