Image: Cleverly-Braehmer and DeGale-Groves on 5/21By Sean McDaniel: WBO light heavyweight interim champion Nathan Cleverly (21-0, 10 KO’s) will be taking on 32-year-old WBO full champion Jurgen Braehmer (36-2, 29 KO’s) on May 21st at the O2 Arena, in Greenwich, London, England. Cleverly, 24, has been waiting for this fight for a long time and has wanted to prove himself.

However, Braehmer isn’t considered the best of the champions at this point in his career and even if Cleverly wins it, which is possible given the age and the ring rust that has accumulated on Braehmer, Cleverly will still have to prove himself against the other champions Beibut Shumenov, Jean Pascal and Tavoris Cloud unless Cleverly is content to milk his title against the to contenders for awhile.

The Cleverly vs. Braehmer fight will be on the same card as the super middleweight match-up between British champion James DeGale (10-0, 8 KO’s) and 22-year-old challenger George Groves (12-0, 10 KO’s). This fight should be interesting because of the rivalry and bad blood that the two fighters have with one another.

As far as the Cleverly-Braehmer bout goes, Cleverly would have to be considered the favorite in this fight because he’s fighting more often and looking really strong in his wins over Karo Murat, Antonio Brancalion and Najib Mohammedi. Braehmer is better and a slicker fighter than all of those guys, so Cleverly is going to have to think of showing some skills and not just looking to slug it out with Braehmer. Cleverly could wind up getting his head boxed off if he tries to run over Braehmer the way that he’s done or tried to do with his last three opponents. Cleverly was able to stop two of them but Mohammedi wasn’t going anywhere and took advantage of Cleverly’s plodding style of fighting by landing a lot of head shots.
