Image: McCrory picks Solis to beat VitaliBy William Mackay: Sky Sports analyst Glen McCrory is picking undefeated Cuban Odlanier Solis (17-0, 12 Ko’s) to beat WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (41-2, 38 KO’s) on Saturday night. McCrory is obviously going against the grain because few people are giving the chunky looking Solis much of a chance to pull off the upset on Saturday, especially with Solis still looking quite overweight and apparently not having taken off much weight from the 260 carrying around on his short 6’1″ frame.

McCrory said this on Sky Sports Ringside: “If he’s [Solis] on form, he should beat Vitali. I just see heavyweight dominance is changing. It’s getting exciting again. We got two guys, two smaller guys who are going to excite the division with Solis and David Haye.”

It’s hard to find anything I can agree with McCrory with on these opinions other than both Solis and Haye being small heavyweights. I agree with McCrory on that. Solis is small in height but as big as house in terms of carrying around a lot of excess flab. However, I don’t agree that Solis will ever beat Vitali. Not in this lifetime and I see him having an even worse time against the more mobile IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. Solis is just too small and fat to beat either of the Klitschkos. McCrory needs to take another look at how out of breath Solis was in his last fight against 40-year-old Ray Austin in December.

Solis gassed out early in the fight after hurting the stationary and weak punching Austin and needed three rounds to get his second wind. Solis was as tired as I’d ever seen a fighter before and could barely throw a handful of punches during the middle of the fight. No, I don’t give Solis any chance of beating Vitali and I don’t see Haye as the new exciting anything. He’s good at beating older heavyweights but not young ones, which he’s never fought any. He’s strictly been fighting old guys. And he’s about to retire now that he’s finally fighting the best guys.
