By Dan Ambrose: If middleweight contender Andy Lee (15-1, 19 KO’s) can’t get a title shot against one of the middleweight champion in his next fight, Lee says he’d be interested in avenging his 7th round knockout loss to slugger Bryan Vera (18-5, 11 KO’s) from March 2008. Lee was batted around by Vera in that fight and looked awful. Lee has rebounded from that defeat and won his last 10 fights. Mosley recently, Lee defeated previously unbeaten middleweight contender Craig McEwan by a 10 round TKO on March 12th.
Lee looked dreadful against McEwan, and was badly hurt early in the fight by some big shots from the light hitting McEwan. Lee lost most of the first six rounds and only found success after McEwan ran out of gas in the second half of the fight. Lee then came on and took out McEwan in the 10th.
In an interview at eastsideboxing.com, Lee said “If I can’t get a title fight in my next fight, then I would like nothing more than to fight Bryan Vera.”
Lee isn’t going to get a title shot and he clearly doesn’t look ready for a shot judging by his poor performance against McEwan. However, I don’t think Lee would do well at all against Vera. He hits too hard and is just too tough for the slender Lee. Vera wore Lee down last time they fought and was punching Lee at will in the 6th and 7th rounds. I can’t see how anything would really chance in a rematch. Lee is just too hittable and stands straight up. His head is like a beacon for punches.
