Image: Vitali to fight in June, needs ChisoraBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO’s) expects to be back in the ring quickly by June for another big money fight against a still to be determined opponent. Vitali was barely hit in 1st round TKO win over Odlanier Solis (17-1, 12 KO’s) in a fight that ended suddenly with Solis blowing out his right knee last Saturday night in Cologne, Germany. Vitali made good money in the fight, a reported $15 million for three minutes of work. He now is looking good a big name for his next bout in June.

However, his opponent will have to be limited to the top 15 in the WBC, because it’s an optional title defense. Easily the best option for Vitali is to take on unbeaten British heavyweight Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s), and that’s only because IBF/WBO Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali’s younger brother, has helped make a small name for Chisora by signing to fight him in the past. They didn’t fight because of Wladimir sustaining an abdominal injury but it really helped Chisora get his name on the world boxing map. As he showed in his press conferences with Wladimir, Chisora is excellent and generating interest for fights due to his promotional skills. Chisora isn’t quite as good as David Haye in that department, but he’s awful close. He’s a good talker and won’t hesitate to give Vitali a mouthful at any opportunity he can get.

Chisora is now a lot better known than guys like Povetkin and Boytsov. The one thing getting in the way of a Chisora-Klitschko fight is Chisora having to defend his British title against Tyson Fury. That well mess things up for Chisora because he’ll have to take that fight next or else face getting stripped of his title. If I’m Chisora, I would lose the worthless British strap and go for a big money fight against Vitali. As we saw with Solis, he got a $1.8 million payday against Vitali. I’m pretty sure that a fight against Fury would being in far less than that. It’s a no-brainer. Chisora needs to vacate the British title if if chosen by Vitali.
