Wladimir may have ruined his chance for Haye fight by choosing Chisora tune-up bout

By Michael Lieberman: IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) may have thrown out his big money fight against WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) out the window by choosing to take on a needless tune-up fight against Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) on April 30th. That fight has effectively turned off Haye, causing him to lose interest in the Klitschko fight. Haye is now looking to play out his string by defending his WBA title against his mandatory challenger Ruslan Chagaev and then against one of the other heavyweight contenders that the World Boxing Association has ranked for him to fight.

Haye intends on retiring on his 31st birthday in October of this year, which makes Wladimir’s decision to fight Chisora all the more puzzling. Haye warned Wladimir not to take the Chisora fight, telling him in clear understandable English that if he took the fight with Chisora that he would be putting in danger their July 2nd mega fight. Wladimir chose to ignore Haye and has gone ahead and signed for the fight against the little known Chisora.

Now instead of a fight between Haye and Wladimir taking place in July, we’re not going to be seeing anything because Haye wants no part of a July 2nd fight with Wladimir if he’s going to fight Chisora on April 30th. While Haye has taken some heat on this issue, I think Wladimir is the one that should be responsible for wrecking the Haye-Klitschko fight because Haye spelled things out to him ahead of time what would happen if Wladimir chose to fight Chisora on 4/30, and Wladimir decided to ignore him and take the fight anyway. It’s on Wladimir now. He picked out Chisora and will have to settle for that fight instead of the one that would have made him a lot more money against Haye.
