Dzinziruk-Martinez: Sergio needs to look good in this fight

By Jason Kim: Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KO’s) has his work cut out for him in his March 12th fight against Sergiy Dzinizruk (37-0, 23 KO’s) at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, Connecticut. This won’t be one of Martinez’s typical plodding opponents without skills. Dzinziruk, 34, is the exact opposite of the types of fighters that Martinez has been facing for most of his career and it’s going to be a tricky fight for Martinez to not only win but look good in doing it.

This is a fight where he could end up winning but losing the fight among boxing fans. HBO liked the idea of Martinez facing the unbeaten Dzinziruk, who holds the WBO title but who hasn’t had any quality opposition to fight in some time. Martinez is going to be a big step up for Dzinziruk, and it’s going to be a tough fight for him as well. He’s going to have to deal with Martinez’s speed and occasional power shots.

However, Dzinziruk isn’t going to make things easy for Martinez by just standing in front of him or going straight at him like former WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik and Paul Williams did in their recent fights with Martinez. Dzinziruk is going to be sticking and moving all night long, making it difficult for Martinez to land his big power shots and his combinations. Things are going to be tough on Martinez in this fight, because he won’t be able to just run over Dzinziruk. He’s going to have to show some technical skills if he wants to get the win and look good in doing so.
