Is Derek Chisora the luckiest Heavyweight in the world?

By Mark Hepplestall: I have so say if I could be any Heavyweight in the world right now, it would be Derek Chisora, good fortune seems to follow this man in every aspect of his life. Derek Chisora (14, 0, 0 KO 9) is a good prospect in the heavyweight division and has found himself a World Title shot against Wladimir Klitschko (55, 3, 0, 49 KO’s). So let’s look deeper into how Derek Chisora is the guy may be the luckiest boxer in the world.

Well firstly Chisora is a 14 fight novice who is yet to go the 12 round distances and has still had such great matchmaking or amazing luck that he has fought for, and unified the British title and the Commonwealth title, Also Chisora has got to this point in his career without having any noticeable names on his record and has never truly taken the scalp of a real contender; names such as Danny Williams may enhance his record but when taking into account that Williams was 36 at the time and two of his last four bouts against Albert Sosnowski and Carl Baker, also the two fights he won could and maybe should have been losses to “the unluckiest heavyweight” also known as John McDermott, so there is no doubt that Williams was defiantly on the decline. The second name on his record is two victories over Sam Sexton, who may have been very to have the commonwealth title in the first place due to the real trouble he had with Martin Rogan, Rogan possibly should have beat Sexton in their first fight by 8th round KO due to Sexton taking repeated and unanswered blows to the head, making him look out on his feet only for the referee to save him by stopping citing Rogan couldn’t see out of his right eye.

Next Chisora has somehow bypassed all of the boxers above him in the world rankings, and even the people who are ranked lower then Chisora but are more prepared when compared to Chisora to fight for a world title, this includes Alexander Povetkin, Odlanier Solis, Alexander Ustinov, Alexander Dimitrenko, and Denis Boytsov. Another question could be would Chisora beat any of the people listed above?

Also Chisora has managed to leave the domestic scene without ever defending his titles, now that the bigger, more dangerous boxers who would give Chisora a hard time are showing up. Boxers include Tyson Fury who has been calling Chisora out for the last 6 months without any luck, David Price who is a very promising prospect and Tom Dallas who is very hard to handle at domestic level.

Lastly and my personal favourite reason why Derek Chisora is the luckiest Heavyweight in the world is that Chisora somehow managed to stay out of prison after being convicted guilty of causing actual bodily harm to his then girlfriend for having texts from another man on her phone, instead of a lengthy sentence He was not jailed, but was given a 12-week prison sentence suspended for two years, he was also ordered to pay £1,500 in compensation and £500 costs and complete 150 hours community work. Fair to say his world title shot kept him from doing time, but what a role model for the kids.
