Warren blasts Haye and Booth for missed Klitschko fight

By William Mackay: Promoter Frank Warren lit into WBA heavyweight champion David Haye and his manager/trainer Adam Booth for having fumbled away a huge money fight against IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. With a fight against Wladimir in their grasp, Booth and Haye basically gave it away by walking out when Wladimir decided to take a tune-up bout against unbeaten Dereck Chisora for April 30th.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Warren said this about Haye and Booth: “Thankfully for Dereck’s sake, Wladimir Klitschko didn’t exercise the get out clause in his contract to fight somebody else. True to form, Adam Booth and David Haye made it an easy decision for him with their negotiations. It’s a big like we’ve been through in the last two weeks trying to make James DeGale and George Groves happen. I read some of the things that Adam Booth and David Haye said about how difficult the Klitschkos were. Well, I can sit here now and honestly say that Adam Booth without a doubt is the most difficult person I’ve ever had to deal with in all the time I’ve been in boxing, bar none. When you get down to stuff that is inconsequential and that stuff becomes an issue, it stops the fight from happening.”

There it is. Warren is telling it like it is. The Haye-Klitschko fight should have been so easy to put together, because Wladimir wanted the fight and he had agreed to the 50-50 deal that Haye had asked for, even though Wladimir should have rightfully asked for a bigger cut because of the fact that he had two titles instead of one and he has been fighting at heavyweight his entire career, not just five bouts against a bunch of old guys like Haye.

Warren continues, “What’s he [Haye] doing fighting Audley Harrison when he could have fought Klitschko” Are people stupid that they don’t even get that? But thankfully, it has opened the door for Dereck and given him this fantastic opportunity again.”

Yes, Haye was milking his WBA title in a fight against 39-year-old Harrison rather than stepping it up and facing one of the Klitschkos. Now it looks like Haye is going to be forced to defend his title against his mandatory challenger Ruslan Chagaev next unless Haye can find a way to worm out of that fight.
