Image: Joshua Clottey vs. Pawel Wolak a possibility for Cotto-Mayorga undercardBy Michael Lieberman: A fight between former IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey (35-4, 20 KO’s) and fringe junior middleweight contender Pawel Wolak (28-1, 18 KO’s) on the pay-per-view undercard of the March 12th bout between WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and 37-year-old challenger Ricardo Mayorga at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Yuri Foreman, the former WBA junior middleweight champion, was also a possibility to face Wolak but reportedly the money isn’t right.

A fight between Clottey and Wolak isn’t all that interesting, but it provides a couple of names for card so that the cost of the PPV fight can be justified. Clottey, 33, looked horrible in losing to Manny Pacquiao in his last bout in March 2010. Clottey did zero in the fight other than covering up and throwing around 10 punches per round. It looked as if he were content to just survive for 12 rounds and not risk his neck by actually going after Pacquiao.

Clottey has done absolutely nothing since then. He wants a big fight but there’s no one there for him. Wolak, a virtual unknown, isn’t the big fight that Clottey is looking for, but he does fight for the same Top Rank promotional company. Clottey has lost his last two fights. However, he’ll likely get another title shot at some point against one of the champions. It looks like Clottey is moving up in weight to the junior middleweight division.

It’s hard to see him making much of an impact up there because he doesn’t match up well with anyone up there other than Cotto. If Clottey threw more punches, he could beat some of these guys but he covers up too much, fades badly late in his fights and isn’t big enough.
