Clottey: I’m retiring Mundine on April 9th

clottey3423By Allan Fox: Former IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey (37-4, 22 KO’s) plans on beating the bigger #3 WBA Anthony Mundine (46-5, 27 KO’s) in front of his own fans on April 9th and sending him into retirement when they meet up at the Entertainment Centre, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Clottey, now 36, realizes that Mundine has selected him in order to get a victory over a well-known fighter to get in position to get a title shot against the WBA 154lb champion Erislandy Lara. Clottey feels that Mundine, 38, is looking past him, and he plans on making him pay for it by beating him and wrecking his dreams of a title shot or a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

“Mundine is in for a rude shock when I retire him April 9 in Australia, he has no idea who he’s fighting,” Clottey said.

Clottey has been kind out of things for the past 4 years since his loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2010. That was Clottey’s biggest fight of his career by far, although he’s also has important fights against a prime Antonio Margarito, Zab Judah, Richard Gutierrez and Miguel Cotto. Clottey has fought only twice since his loss to Pacquiao. He beat Calvin Green in 2011, and Dashon Johnson last year in September.

Mundine is getting Clottey at the perfect moment in his career with him more or less a very rusty fighter from long stretches of inactivity.

Mundine has won his last two fights since his loss to Daniel Geale last year. In his last fight he beat Gunnar Jackson, and in his fight before that he beat Shane Mosley. Mundine appears to be selecting for either older fighters that are recognizable to his Australian fans or local Australian fighters like Jackson, Garth Wood, Geale and Ryan Waters.

If Clottey does beat Mundine somehow then it’ll be all over for him as far as getting a world title fight against Lara or one of the other 154lb champions. Mundine would also have to forget about his dreams of facing Mayweather and Canelo.
