Booth looking to match Haye against 38-year-old Mormeck – Boxing News

By William Mackay: Keeping with his recent tradition of matching WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 3 KO’s) against older heavyweights between 36 to 39, Adam Booth, the trainer/manage for Haye, is saying that he’s interested in matching Haye against 38-year-old Jean Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22 KO’s), For Booth and Haye, it’s a winnable fight for the Hayemaker, as Mormeck is old, short at 5’11”, and hasn’t looked good at all since moving up to the heavyweight division in December 2009.

Mormeck has won all three fights he’s taken part in at the heavyweight, but he’s had two consecutive controversial – some say gift – decisions over B level heavyweights Fres Oquendo and Timur Ibragimov. Those are guys that better heavyweights are expected to easily beat, yet Mormeck appeared to lose to both of them. Never the less, the WBA have given Mormeck the inflated ranking of number #8 in the heavyweight division, and that will perhaps give Booth and Haye cover if they select Mormeck to fight next.

In an interview at ffboxe.com, Booth said “Logically, David [Haye] was supposed to fight [Ruslan] Chagaev, but the news about his health are not very good. He reportedly suffers from hepatitis B, which makes their confrontation impossible. I then looked a the classification of the WBA and I found nothing terrible in the top 10, But I saw that Jean Marc Mormeck is now ranked in the top 10, 7 or 8, I think that makes a fight with Mormeck-Haye possible. In England, there is no problems. We sell 20,000 tickets in two or three weeks for each bout of David. And France is not a small country that has many champions. Haye-Mormeck in England is possible. But if France wants to see this fight in Paris, David is quite ready to return. It will demonstrate that his first success against Jean-Marc is not a coincidence and is now a true heavyweight, harder and more compact.”

There it is, folks. Booth is looking to cherry pick another opponent for Haye. This is pretty incredible and sickening at the same time. Haye already beat Mormeck in 2007, when he stopped him in the 7th round when they were both cruiserweights. Although Haye was down in the 4th round, there’s no point in a rematch taking place between these two fighters because Mormeck looks horrible and old at heavyweight.

This is more milking from Haye. Since he moved up to heavyweight in 2008, Haye has fought the 38-year-old Monte Barrett, 36-year-old Nikolay Valuev, 38-year-old John Ruiz and the 39-year-old Audley Harrison. The 38-year-old Mormeck fits in nicely among those old codgers.
